Economic transactions, grounded in implicit or explicit contracts defining parties' rights and obligations, face fundamental financial, economic, and accounting challenges. Chapter 2 examines the current state of blockchain technology in economic transactions and identifies challenges in interoperability, scalability, and regulation. Blockchain technology offers a solution, as evidenced by a proposed blockchain-based prototype tailored to capture the essence of recurring economic transactions. Chapter 3, titled “Universal Contract on Blockchain” presents the design requirements, permission layers, privacy considerations, and architecture solutions for general economic transactions on blockchain. Chapter 4, “Recurring Economic Transactions on Blockchain: Asset Rental Case Study” demonstrates through an asset rental contract how this prototype showcases more effective, efficient, and quasi-real time recording and tracking of transactions, revolutionizing traditional accounting, and auditing methods. Leveraging the Ethereum blockchain, the most advanced and widely adopted smart contract platform, the prototype also reveals a significant discovery regarding current limitations in facilitating automatic non-custodial recurring payments while illustrating its potential extension to various recurring transaction scenarios. Finally, in Chapter 5, titled “Conclusions” research on blockchain-enabled economic transactions is summarized, emphasizing contributions such as an automated recurring transaction prototype and the establishment of an IEEE SA working group for standardization (P3228). Future developments, including machine learning integration, enhanced stability, and privacy measures, are outlined, signaling ongoing advancements in managing recurring transactions through blockchain technology
